5C Green

5-Color Green Midrange

Featured list~$1189Portland Monthly Premodern Paper Magic Afternoons (PMPMPMPM #14) @ Portland (Oregon)

Overview

"Built on Birds of Paradise and Llanowar Elves, this green-based five-color midrange deck splashes every color to pair the best removal and counters, leaning on Swords to Plowshares, Lightning Bolt, Fire // Ice, and Mana Leak. Its threats arrive fast and resilient through Call of the Herd, Phyrexian Negator, and a Rancor-carried beater, while Sylvan Library refills the hand and Winter Orb strands opponents short on mana the accelerators already supply."

Game Plan

5C Green is a mana-accelerated midrange deck that wins by deploying powerful threats ahead of curve and then slamming the door with resource denial. The opening hand builds around a one-mana accelerator (Birds of Paradise, Fyndhorn Elves, or Llanowar Elves) that lets the deck land a second-turn Winter Orb while the opponent is still developing. Under that lock the deck's creatures keep attacking: Phyrexian Negator applies lethal pressure in four swings, and Call of the Herd manufactures a 3/3 token on turn two or three with a second elephant held in flashback for exactly the moment removal runs dry. Fire // Ice handles small blockers and taps troublesome permanents, Swords to Plowshares exiles anything larger, and Mana Leak punishes opponents who try to spend the few mana points Winter Orb leaves them.

When the board grinds into attrition, the five-color breadth becomes the deck's second axis of advantage. Thornscape Apprentice taps down the one creature that would otherwise survive combat, while Lightning Bolt and Fire // Ice clear the path for the next attack. Call of the Herd's flashback means threats keep arriving even after hand resources thin out, and Naturalize breaks any artifact or enchantment the opponent tries to use as a bridge out of the Winter Orb lock. The deck closes primarily through Phyrexian Negator backed by disruption, but will happily win on the back of an elephants-and-bolts clock if the Negator meets removal. The redundancy of threats and interaction across all five colors is what makes the prison bite.
