Gamekeeper Rock
Rock Toolbox
Overview
"This black-green midrange toolbox grinds opponents down with Duress and Cabal Therapy while Pernicious Deed sweeps the board and Vendetta and Innocent Blood pick off key creatures. Its payoff is Gamekeeper, who when sacrificed digs out and cheats fatties like Phantom Nishoba into play, supported by Call of the Herd for pressure and Rampant Growth for ramp. Living Wish stitches the singleton package together, tutoring the right creature or land each matchup demands."
Game Plan
Gamekeeper Rock opens by sculpting the mana with Rampant Growth while dismantling the opponent's hand with Duress and Cabal Therapy: the discard suite strips counters before they matter and exposes removal before Gamekeeper walks into it. Early pressure comes from Call of the Herd, which simultaneously feeds Cabal Therapy's flashback and threatens a second token if the first is answered. Vendetta and Innocent Blood handle whatever slips through, and Pernicious Deed sits as a loaded reset button, held up to threaten everything on board without touching the lands underneath. The true payoff arrives when Gamekeeper dies, most cleanly via Innocent Blood, High Market, or a Pernicious Deed that simultaneously wipes the opponent's board: its trigger digs into the library and drops Phantom Nishoba directly into play, a seven-mana 7/4 trampler with protection from black and green that heals for each point of damage dealt.
Against opponents who can kill Gamekeeper at instant speed or fight through a single Nishoba, Living Wish becomes the deck's second engine, fetching an additional Gamekeeper from the sideboard to rebuild the threat, or pulling Bone Shredder, Mesmeric Fiend, Gigapede, or Dust Bowl as the matchup dictates. Treetop Village closes games where the combo is under disruption, attacking as a 3/3 trampler that Pernicious Deed cannot touch and that bounces back to a land before sorcery-speed removal resolves. The deck's grinding power lies in the redundancy between its disruption, its sacrifice outlets, and Living Wish's ability to reload the singleton toolbox on demand.
