Mono Black Midrange
Mono-Black Midrange
Overview
"Mono Black Midrange dismantles the opponent's hand with Duress, Cabal Therapy, Hypnotic Specter, and Ravenous Rats, often accelerated by a turn-one Dark Ritual, then closes with the firebreathing Nantuko Shade and Knight of Stromgald backed by precise removal in Smother, Diabolic Edict, and Snuff Out. Graveborn Muse and Phyrexian Arena refuel through attrition while Cursed Scroll provides a repeatable mana sink and late-game inevitability. Redundant disruption, cheap threats, and flexible removal make it a consistent proactive black strategy."
Game Plan
Mono Black Midrange wins by collapsing the opponent's options before they can execute a plan. The opening turns are dedicated to information and erasure: Duress strips the most dangerous noncreature spell while revealing the hand, and Cabal Therapy, cast with knowledge already in hand, names into the remnants, often clearing two cards with a single flashback off a Ravenous Rats or Withered Wretch. Dark Ritual accelerates this sequence by a full turn, letting the deck land Hypnotic Specter on turn one and compound the disruption into card theft with every flying attack. The creature suite does double duty: Withered Wretch attacks graveyards while applying early pressure, Ravenous Rats triggers an additional discard on entry, and Nantuko Shade converts spare black mana into a decisive combat swing. Smother, Diabolic Edict, and Snuff Out cover whatever the opponent manages to deploy through the disruption.
Once the opponent's hand is thin or empty, the deck shifts into a grinding engine. Graveborn Muse draws cards equal to the Zombies in play each upkeep, refilling the hand faster than most Premodern strategies can match; Phyrexian Arena provides a slower but steadier supplementary draw when it appears. Nantuko Shade absorbs spare mana at instant speed to threaten lethal damage the moment blockers thin out, and Cursed Scroll, most effective precisely when the pilot's own hand is nearly depleted, activates reliably to snipe key creatures or drain the opponent to zero over several turns. Mishra's Factory provides an uncounterable attacker that applies pressure through otherwise impenetrable stalls. The deck wins not through a single decisive blow but by leaving the opponent unable to refuel, then closing with threats that were never cleanly answered.
