Mud
Artifact Prison
Overview
"MUD is a colorless artifact prison deck that ramps with Metalworker, Thran Dynamo, and Mind Stone to power out lock pieces well ahead of schedule. Winter Orb, Tangle Wire, and Sphere of Resistance strangle the opponent's mana while the deck's own artifact accelerants keep it producing under the lock, and Smokestack and Mishra's Helix grind away whatever survives. From that prison it closes with hard-hitting colorless threats: Karn, Silver Golem, Masticore, and Triskelion, with Powder Keg, Ensnaring Bridge, and Black Vise rounding out its control."
Game Plan
MUD wins by establishing a mana lead on turns one and two, then locking the opponent out before they can mount a response. Ancient Tomb and City of Traitors provide double mana from the opening hand, and Mind Stone or Thran Dynamo push that lead further so Tangle Wire lands on turn two while the opponent is still developing. Sphere of Resistance taxes every spell they try to cast through the stall, and Rishadan Port drains whatever untapped mana they retain. The deck tolerates its own symmetrical locks because artifact accelerants already produced their mana the turn they entered, and Goblin Welder recovers any piece the opponent destroys, pulling it back from the graveyard while exchanging a spent ramp artifact in return.
Once the opponent is frozen, Smokestack converts the mana advantage into board erasure: at one or two soot counters it outpaces any opponent already trading permanents to Tangle Wire, grinding their last resources away while MUD's artifact density absorbs the symmetrical sacrifice. Winter Orb seals the exit by stripping untap steps so they cannot rebuild. Masticore and Karn, Silver Golem are the closers: Masticore pings blockers away turn after turn as long as the hand stays stocked, while Karn animates a Thran Dynamo or Mind Stone into an attacker sized to punch through whatever survives. Triskelion distributes its three damage counters to clear a path or end a stalled board, and Goblin Welder keeps recycling any threat the opponent answers back into the red zone.
