Trix
Donate Combo
Overview
"A legendary combo-control deck that pairs Illusions of Grandeur with Donate to give the opponent a lethal upkeep cost. It uses a heavy blue card-draw shell to assemble the pieces while disrupting the opponent's game plan."
Game Plan
Trix opens by developing mana as fast as possible. Ancient Tomb puts two mana into play on turn one, and Sapphire Medallion on turn two slashes the cost of every blue spell in the deck. Those first two turns are entirely dedicated to enabling the kill window: once a Medallion is in play, Illusions of Grandeur and Donate together cost five generic mana instead of seven, collapsing the combo onto a single cluttered turn. The search engine funds this assembly. Portent and Impulse filter the early draws toward either half of the two-card kill, while Intuition, the most powerful tutor in the deck, fetches three copies of Accumulated Knowledge at once, guaranteeing a massive card-draw spike that rapidly closes the gap to both combo pieces. The game plan is not to resolve the kill blindly but to build a protected window: Mana Leak and Counterspell hold open mana on the critical turn to answer any attempt to disrupt Illusions of Grandeur before Donate hands it off.
When the combo turn arrives, Illusions of Grandeur resolves on the opponent's side of the table courtesy of Donate, saddling them with a cumulative upkeep they cannot pay, twenty life drained in short order. Chain of Vapor serves as the deck's primary interaction against hate permanents blocking the line, bouncing problematic artifacts or enchantments so the combo can proceed cleanly. If the first attempt is disrupted, Fact or Fiction in the mid-game refills the hand and recycles toward a second attempt; the density of four Illusions of Grandeur and four Donate means the deck can afford to lose one exchange and still reassemble. Morphling, appearing in sideboard configurations, enters as the true backup win when the combo route is too well-hated, grinding out an otherwise unanswerable clock in games where decking the opponent into a Trix-shaped story is no longer viable.
