Why It's Banned
For just 1R, Goblin Recruiter tutors any number of Goblins straight to the top of your library in the exact order you choose, converting a fair tribal deck into a deterministic combo engine. In a format built on the variance and back-and-forth of mid-90s tribal aggro, freely arranging the top of your library is simply too much consistency: it removes the draw-step gamble that keeps Goblin mirrors and matchups interactive. Chained into Goblin Ringleader, it lets you replay half your deck and assemble explosive, near-unbeatable starts that no Premodern-legal answer is meant to keep pace with.
Printed in Tempest in 1997 as an unassuming uncommon, it became the connective tissue of every serious Goblin combo shell, later notorious in Legacy as the engine behind Food Chain Goblins and Goblin Recruiter combo kills.
Banned for handing a fair tribe an unfair, deck-stacking tutor that breaks Premodern's interactive, variance-driven game plan.
Trivia & Lore
- Goblin Recruiter debuted in Visions (released February 3, 1997) at uncommon, collector number 80, illustrated by Scott Kirschner, with the one-word flavor text "Next!"
- Scott Kirschner illustrated every printing that reuses the classic art: Visions (1997), Anthologies (1998), Classic Sixth Edition (1999), and Mystery Booster 2 (2024), all carrying the "Next!" flavor line. The lone exception is the 2023 Secret Lair Drop, which has brand-new art by 'Wizard of Barge' and is the only version printed at rare and with no flavor text.
- Despite being a banned Visions-era card, Goblin Recruiter is NOT on the Reserved List (Scryfall reports its reserved flag as false), which is why Wizards could legally reprint it in the 2023 Secret Lair and Mystery Booster 2 (2024).
- Goblin Recruiter was banned in Extended in the December 2003 B&R announcement, alongside Tinker, Grim Monolith, Hermit Druid, Oath of Druids, and Ancient Tomb. Goblin Lackey had already been banned from Extended in October 2003, but that earlier ban failed to slow the Goblin combo deck, so Recruiter itself got the axe.
- An Extended kill used Recruiter as a deck-stacker for Goblin Charbelcher: cast Recruiter to pull every Goblin to the top of the library (incidentally leaving no lands near the top, like a free Mana Severance), then fire Charbelcher. A documented combo turn ran Ancient Tomb, Chrome Mox, Seething Song, Goblin Recruiter, Skirk Prospector, sacrifice both goblins, then Goblin Charbelcher for the win.
- The current Oracle text reads: "search your library for any number of Goblin cards, reveal them, then shuffle and put those cards on top in any order." You still get to stack the searched Goblins on top in whatever order you want; the shuffle only randomizes the cards left underneath.
- An official 2008-04-01 ruling clarifies that Recruiter can find any card with the Goblin creature type, including old 'Summon Goblin/Summon Goblins' cards and Kindred (tribal) cards, but it cannot grab cards that merely have 'Goblin' in their name without the creature type.
- Goblin Recruiter is banned in both Legacy and Premodern yet fully legal (and unrestricted) in Vintage and legal in Commander, making it one of the rare cards that stays legal in the game's most powerful constructed format while being banned in formats directly beneath it.
Critical Rulings
"You can search for any card with the creature type Goblin, including creature or kindred cards. Older cards of type "Summon Goblin" and "Summon Goblins" also count. You can't search for cards that have Goblin in the name but don't have the creature type Goblin."
