Classic Sixth Edition · 1999

Where to Buy

WotC removed this card from sale in the US, so major US retailers (TCGplayer, Card Kingdom) and MTGO don't carry it. It's still listed in Europe on Cardmarket, and third-party sellers trade it on eBay.

Why is This Card Difficult to Purchase?

Premodern-legal, but WotC no longer sells or reprints it.

Pradesh Gypsies is fully Premodern-legal, but you can't buy it from the usual stores: Wizards of the Coast removed it from official sale, reprinting, and its Gatherer database in 2020. It is a {2}{G} green creature whose name uses a slur for the Romani people and whose depiction is an ethnic caricature, which is why WotC pulled it. Premodern is a community-run format that sets its own rules, and the community keeps it legal; WotC simply no longer sells or prints it. WotC's removal is a US-facing decision. Major US retailers and MTGO dropped it, but European marketplaces aren't bound by it, so existing copies are still listed in Europe on Cardmarket and trade on eBay's secondary market.

First printed in Fallen Empires in 1994, Pradesh Gypsies was reprinted through Fourth Edition (1995), Fifth Edition (1997), and Classic Sixth Edition (1999), keeping it inside the Premodern card pool. On June 10, 2020, Wizards of the Coast published "Depictions of Racism in Magic" and banned seven cards from all sanctioned tournament play while removing their images from Gatherer: Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade. Pradesh Gypsies was flagged for its name ("Gypsies" is a slur for the Romani people) and its caricatured depiction. WotC has not reprinted or sold it since.

Premodern-legal, but WotC no longer sells or reprints it. The format's community ban list does not include Pradesh Gypsies, so it is legal to play in paper Premodern; it is only "delisted" in the commercial sense: banned from WotC-sanctioned play and pulled from official sale and reprint. Existing copies (Fallen Empires through Sixth Edition) remain perfectly usable; US retailers won't list them, but European marketplaces such as Cardmarket still do, and copies trade on eBay.

Trivia & Lore

  • Pradesh Gypsies is a {2}{G} Creature — Human Nomad whose ability reads "{1}{G}, {T}: Target creature gets -2/-0 until end of turn," a repeatable way to blunt an attacker or blocker's power.
  • It was first printed in Fallen Empires (1994) and reprinted in Fourth Edition (1995), Fifth Edition (1997), and Classic Sixth Edition (1999); the 6th Edition printing is inside the Premodern card pool.
  • On June 10, 2020, Wizards of the Coast banned Pradesh Gypsies from all sanctioned tournament play and removed its image from Gatherer, alongside six other cards, in its "Depictions of Racism in Magic" announcement; its name uses a slur for the Romani people.
  • The seven cards removed together were Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Stone-Throwing Devils, Pradesh Gypsies, Jihad, Imprison, and Crusade.
  • Cards that WotC removed for being culturally offensive, Pradesh Gypsies among them, remain legal to play in Premodern, because Premodern is a community-created format that maintains its own ban list independent of Wizards.
  • Scryfall flags Pradesh Gypsies with a content warning (content_warning: true), reflecting WotC's removal of the card from its official database, and no longer lists a market price for it.
