Why It's Banned
Strip Mine is a colorless land that taps for mana yet sacrifices itself to destroy any land, including basics, for a net-zero mana investment. In a format where every deck runs basics and mana bases are deliberately fragile, that repeatable, color-free disruption lets aggro and control decks mana-screw opponents out of games before any real interaction happens. Premodern prizes grindy, decision-dense play, and a free land-for-land trade that costs no spell slot and hits the most basic resource undermines that entire premise.
Strip Mine first appeared in Antiquities (1994) and was reprinted in Chronicles (1995), 4th Edition (1995), and 5th Edition (1997), making it legal by set in Premodern's 4th-Edition-through-Scourge pool. Long restricted or banned in older formats for the same land-denial reasons, it was placed on Premodern's ban list when the format's rules were formalized.
Banned: free, repeatable, colorless land destruction that punishes basic lands is too oppressive for an interactive format.
Trivia & Lore
- Strip Mine debuted in Antiquities, Magic's second expansion, released March 4, 1994. The set was built around an artifact theme telling the Brothers' War story and was created by the group of University of Pennsylvania associates who had helped Richard Garfield design the original game (Skaff Elias, Jim Lin, Joel Mick, Chris Page, and Dave Pettey).
- Antiquities printed FOUR distinct Strip Mine artworks, all by Daniel Gelon, which collectors name by background details: 'No Horizon,' 'Uneven Horizon,' 'Tower,' and 'Even Horizon' (they differ in whether a horizon line is visible, whether the terraces are even, and whether a tower structure appears in the foreground).
- Strip Mine was illustrated by Daniel Gelon, and its flavor text reads: 'Unlike previous conflicts, the war between Urza and Mishra made Dominia itself a casualty of war.' (note the old-world spelling 'Dominia' rather than 'Dominaria').
- Per Brian Weissman ('father of card advantage,' architect of 'The Deck'), Strip Mine was restricted only in Type 2 (Standard) following 1996 US Nationals, lumped in alongside cards like Hymn to Tourach and Necropotence; it was NOT restricted in Type 1/Vintage at that time.
- Strip Mine was finally restricted in Type 1/Vintage only because of the 1997 printing of Wasteland, which effectively gave decks eight copies of the Strip Mine effect; restricting the Antiquities original then made sense. It remains restricted in Vintage today.
- Strip Mine is one of the most debated cards in Old School '93/94 banning policy: the Eternal Central (EC) ruleset keeps it unrestricted as a 4-of, while the Swedish ruleset restricts it to a single copy, producing two materially different formats.
- Strip Mine was reprinted in Fourth Edition (released April 1, 1995) as an uncommon (#363), and that printing has a recognized '4th Edition - Alternate' variant (also #363) that sells at a steep premium over the standard 4th Edition copy.
- Strip Mine is banned (not merely restricted) in both Legacy and the Arena-based Historic format, while only restricted in Vintage. It is also worth 1 point in Canadian Highlander's points system.
